TOOLS OF THE TRADE.

Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) wrote authentic tales of the sea because he really did serve in the Royal Navy during the Age of Sail, beginning his career at the age of 14. His stories are filled with adventure, humor, and insight into his subject and his characters. Pictured here are a 1904 edition of Marryat's 'Peter Simple,' a telescope, a bos'un's whistle, a compass, and a few other little items evocative of life aboard a tall ship.
